A caterpillar attacked by a parasitoid wasp
A neighbor found this on a tomato plant in her garden. A parasitoid wasp has attacked a caterpillar, paralyzed it and laid eggs on its back. When the young hatch, they’ll burrow into the victim and eat it alive. Gruesome, but nature’s earned her points for creativity tonight.
Tomato plants are known to release chemicals that attract predators, including wasps, when under attack from herbivores. Caterpillar did not know who it was fucking with.
Thanks are in order for Barbara Scorse, who took this picture.
